What are Pliers?
Pliers to put it simply are a hand tool that is used to hold
something tightly. They can also be used to bend or cut hard material
like sheet metal or wire.
Pliers are basically 2 levers that are joined at pivot position. That results in two small jaws on one side and two longer handles on the other. That gives you the ability to grip the handles with some power but more importantly to be accurate.
Types of Pliers
There are various differnt types and designs of pliers. Many are designed for just general use (gripping). Others are absolutely made for a specific purpose.
Here are some different types of pliers and their use:
Gripping Pliers:
- Flat-nose pliers; These are also called duckbill pliers because they look like a duck's bill. They are long and narrow and very strong but generally can't be used to access very small spaces.
- Long-nose pliers; These are often called needle nose pliers. They too have long, narrow jaws but they are more specifically used for confined areas.
Crimping Pliers
- These are used for a wide variety of purposes including the
crimping of metal, plastic, jewelry and more.
Specialty Pliers
- Wire-stripping pliers: These are used to take the
insulation off electrical wire. The key though is that it leaves the
wire intact so usually it can be connected to other wires completing a
circuit.
- Fencing pliers: These are very cool pliers that
contain a hammer, nail puller and wire cutter all in one tool.
- Glass-breaking pliers: These are kind of self explainatory, but very often needed by specialists in certain construction industries.
